An excellent educational essay on BLOAT. Explore the article to sign up for more educational essays – by one of the greatest veterinarians of all time in my opinion. -Cindy Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), commonly referred to as bloat, is a severe and life-threatening condition in dogs where the stomach fills with gas and twists upon itself. This causes a major blockage of blood flow, leading to shock and potentially fatal outcomes if not treated immediately. Symptoms include abdominal distension, unproductive …
For 15 years Cindy built and ran LA PAW SPA Canine Hydrotherapy in Sequim, Washington. In 2023, this facility was closed and moved to Port Townsend. During her time in Sequim, here are some articles about the facility that she built there. We wanted to post these in case this can help anyone else who is building a facility for dogs in their community.

She is not a veterinarian and so this information is not veterinary advice. These videos are intended to help educate those with a bowel incontinent dog. Be sure to work with your veterinarian on how these techniques might help you and your pup.
When someone recently asked me to write this article on the health benefits of canine hydrotherapy, my mind tried to embrace what that article would actually say…. as water therapy is so much deeper than what people usually think. To me, it was as if someone had just asked me to write about the size of outer space… i.e. vast… endless… almost too big for words…. But I’ll give it a try! The main reason why most people seek …
A cheap genius invention from a client I saw yesterday, he made this collar with pipe insulation from home depot for their dog to keep the ears out of the water while swimming.
Fletcher was our sweet dog. Half golden retriever and half yellow lab, she entertained us almost constantly for 13½ years. She was very high energy and puppy-like for the first ten years, but as time went by, she began to age. After about 11 years Fletcher began having some incontinence issues. It wasn’t all that often, and we lived in a “dog house,” so it wasn’t the end of the world to clean up a dribble here or there. But …

With bowel incontinence, the bowels usually eventually move… but not with urine which a dog can retain. It is therefore important that your dog eliminate as much urine as possible from the bladder on a regular basis or he/she will risk getting a urinary infection which could, if left untreated, become a kidney infection. You can learn to express your dogs bladder and help your pet get on a regular program for long term health. The bladder in the dog …
This is a picture of a male dog from behind. In expressing the bowels, you are only helping provide stimulation where the body is compromised and needs help. Carefully using a gloved finger, you can begin gently pressing and drawing circles on the area above the anus which usually will stimulate contractions of the colon and produce feces. Once your dog begins to pass feces, continue gently drawing those circles until he’s done. Don’t be in a hurry. I use …
A dog will usually arrive at your pool in order to regain full range of motion, to build confidence, to build muscle and strength. I personally don’t often use a flotation device as I want to be able to support the dog, feel his movement and have access to his entire body for massage, however, for those dogs who don’t need this hands on approach, a floatation device MUST first and foremost be of utmost comfort and not impose on …

The simple answer is “Whenever it needs it”. The real question is “How do I know when my pool needs a shock treatment?” Why Shock? First, it helps to understand what a shock treatment is and why we need to do it. When clients (both canine and human) enter the pool, they introduce organics into the water. These include sweat, saliva, skin cells, body lotions, deodorants, soil, urine, loam, and a host of other things. Mother nature also contributes by …

Booties and Protective Wear Sometimes when a dog has lost full mobility of a limb, they drag their foot/feet and we need to think about protection. I have seen people get very creative here from daily wrapping with vetrap to little kid mittens and ductape. Luckily we have many companies now that offer many different kinds of protective footwear now. Booties If your dog has started dragging his feet or scuffing, booties can be a great way to protect those delicate paws.

When you start thinking about which sanitation method to use, you will most likely be overwhelmed with the choices. Of course the goal is to get as organic and healthy as you can get and still maintain a sanitary pool. Many pools today are leaning toward salt chlorination with the assistance of an ozonator. An ozonator can be added to nearly every system and will make it more efficient. I personally always add an ozonator with a degasser unit to …
WHAT CHEMICAL LEVELS DO I NEED TO TEST FOR REGULARLY? The four main tests to perform with a test kit are pH, Chlorine (or other sanitizer residual, Total Aklalinity and Calcium Hardness. Fascia is the one single that that connects us… it’s the wrapping in the body that surrounds every single muscle, bone, organ… every little thing in the body is surrounded by and connected by fascia. Towels and the laundering of towels will be one item that anyone with a pool will become all too familiar with. It is nice when planning the design of your pool, that you allow for a washer and dryer nearby. Get plenty of towels – cheap ones. Some pools ask the client to bring their own towels but this can be an inconvenience and then you are sending the client home with a car full of wet towels. I prefer …

What do we do when our loving pets face the last leg of the race? We do all we can to help them finish well, of course. We take time to read the unspoken needs of the friends we’ve come to know so well. We give the simple reassurance of a loving touch when the old boy seems confused for no reason. We groom them faithfully, but more gently, as age brings muscle wasting, and the arthritic bones aren’t so …
By using a combination system of Hydrogen Peroxide, Ultra-Violet Light, & Super Filtration we keep the water healthy and clean for the environment! Hydrogen peroxide kills microorganisms by over oxidizing them with too much oxygen. Hydrogen peroxide is water and oxygen, the two most essential and beneficial elements to human life. H202 will naturally and completely decompose through its usage cycle into pure and safe atoms of only water and oxygen. Thus, there is neither chemical build up nor conversion to other chemical …

Question: Hi! I am wondering why there are not more pools for hydrotherapy here in Australia yet? I have been researching the water treadmills and believe they would be an excellent rehab process amongst other types of medical reasons. The Combat Extreme Toss n’ Pull Dog Toy is constructed of a very durable fabric, which makes it ideal for aggressive chewers and rough-housing. A tennis ball is attached to the adjustable heavy-duty rope, thereby giving dogs a choice of two toys to retrieve. Q: What is pH? Mine is frequently off, but my water looks fine. A: Well, pH stands for “potential of hydrogen”, but I prefer to think of it as Potential Hazard. It is probably the single most important test in your pool kit, and keeping the pH in the correct range is one of the most valuable things you can do to keep your pool clean and safe. pH is basically a measure of the relative acidity / alkalinity of …

Q: How big a pump do I need for my pool? A: Here is a case where bigger probably IS better. There are generally two uses for pumps in a pool. Jet pumps are used to create a current to swim against and/or to massage aching muscles. These are generally separate from the circulation pumps, which are used to move water through the filter, heater, and sanitizing systems. We’ll talk about the latter. The typical rule of thumb for circulation pumps …
Q: I’ve heard that chlorinated pools can be dangerous. Is that true? A: The answer is “possibly”. Any substance, even pure water, can be dangerous or even deadly when used improperly. Chlorine is no exception. Chlorine is the most commonly used sanitizer for pools. When used properly it is safe, effective, and economical. Unfortunately, its popularity also means it is the most frequently misused chemical in the industry. This misuse can lead to unhealthful conditions. We’ve all walked into a health …
Do you know what you are putting in your pool? Chemicals are a necessary part of pool maintenance. As much as we would like to eliminate them, it just isn’t practical (or safe) to go without. However, it is vitally important that you understand what is in the chemicals that you do use, and also when they should be used. Without that understanding, you may be adding many more things than you need to, or in some cases actually doing …
A properly maintained pool incorporates both filtration and sanitation. We sanitize to kill bacteria, viruses, and algae, and we filter to remove particles suspended in the water. While clear water is not a guarantee that the water is safe to swim in, cloudy water is definitely a sign that something needs attention. Your filter is a critical part of your pool system, and should be selected with care and properly maintained. In this issue, we’ll provide some information to help …
Q: I want to build a pool. What do you think is the best size? A: There is probably no “best size”, but here are some things to think about that might help you make a decision. First, what type of clients do you hope to attract? A typical 800 gallon spa would be fine if your business is limited to providing massage therapy. There’s not much room for swimming, but there are many tubs to choose from and you …

We are quite the visually oriented species. We make many critical decisions during the day based upon visual input. Sometimes the visual stimulus is dramatic, such as a frown on a child’s face. Sometimes it can be subtle as in sensing the expressions of a stranger’s glance. It should be no surprise that we make our purchasing decisions based upon what we see and how we feel about what we see. A useful tool to aid in the promotion of …
There are many methods of promotion within the media mix that allow you to introduce your unique service to the public. A quite successful tool, when used effectively, is the “press release.” A successful press release announces your canine services to the general population, the local veterinarians, canine association members, and other “target” markets for your services. The goal of your announcement is seeing an article about your services followed by watching an increase in the number of clients on …
In a recent poll, 90% of the business web sites were created specifically so their customers and prospects could find their current contact information. At first it would seem that is a considerable amount of effort for “just” a phone number or a mailing address. But then when you consider the time and money to establish a new address or phone number through the “established” channels of communication (phone book, newspaper, etc.) it makes sense; particularly when it is your …
